Kitchen Utensils
Industrial Design
Brief
Design a set of three utensils for the urban chef who is design conscious and wanting something extra special.
Strategies & Solutions
After sketching a variety of kitchen utensils, I decided on a slotted spoon, ladle and potato masher because they are generally used together. I received feedback on my sketches and made models out of air-dry clay of the most popular designs for the slotted spoon. I then conducted a survey where participants could handle the models to see how they felt and how they might work. At the same time, I also collected a variety of slotted spoons already on sale and asked people what they liked about them and what could be improved. The feedback led to new concept models made from modelling foam or air-dry clay. Once again, I received feedback on the pros, cons and possible improvements for each design. This determined my final design, which I modelled and sent to Shapeways to be 3D printed.
