Brief

Design a lampshade made from polypropylene, can easily be flat packed, requires no additional fasteners to assemble and fits on the IKEA Trogsta Floor Lamp base.

Strategies & Solutions

Sketching ideas led to five designs modelled out of paper. After feedback, I narrowed it down to three designs and made 1:1 scale models out of cardboard, using the Trogsta lamp base as a template. The biggest challenge was to work out how to get the components to secure to the main cylinder without fasteners. The concept models highlighted that the design was too floppy and too plain. Adding a small leaf shape pattern to the design was advantageous in letting more light through and playing with the use of shadows. Once I finalised the design in cardboard, the pieces were scanned, traced in Adobe Illustrator, then laser cut.
