Observation Bee Hive
Industrial Design
Brief
To design an observation beehive that is aesthetically pleasing and reduces the stress on the bees as well as allowing the education of bees and bee hives to be carried out safely.
Strategies & Solutions
This observation beehive was developed in collaboration with Urban Hum, a local urban beekeeping company. They run workshops on beekeeping and wanted a safe way to observe a working beehive. The beehive is covered to keep it dark and keep the bees happy. When the wooden box is lifted, it reveals a perspex beehive constructed with the box joint method. A perspex lid can be slid off to allow removal of the honey frames. Wheels were added for easier transportation. I made a variation in the wooden box lid that would allow two hives to be stacked on top of each other.
