Bird Feeder
Industrial Design

To repurpose the IKEA 365+ Carafe.
Strategies & Solutions
This bird feeder repurposed the IKEA 365+ Carafe. I began with many sketches of various possibilities, then surveyed people’s opinions. The top three designs were modelled on SolidWorks and 3D printed. This made it easier to see how each product might work and to fix any issues. Three variations of the three designs led to the bird feeder idea. Bronze was originally chosen for its aesthetics and durability. However, bronze was costly and difficult to manufacture, so I decided to use HDPE instead. Using injection moulding made it cost effective and very sustainable. I designed it on SolidWorks in two parts and thickened up the material both for aesthetics and to allow for internal pins to join the two pieces. To reduce material use, I added internal ribs. I also made calculations on costs and profitability of the product.
